Fred Gottlieb handles percussion instruments at the Tower. agitation when he wrote the sereenplay of a story about a Missouri Woman outlaw known as Belle Start. "Belle Start" will be a movie about a woman outlaw.
"The real Belle Start probably was a homely tobacco chewer. Our Belle Start is a pretty little spitfire (played by Gene Tierney, who is pretty and little). We had to have her young and pretty to get in the romance. We don't know why the original Belle was an outlaw—maybe she liked the work—and, frankly, we don't care why for -movie purposes. Even if the facts were available, which they aren't, we wouldn't care.
"The reason for making our Belle Start an outlaw is simple: she's a Southern gal who thinks she has reasons to go on fighting the Civil War for years after Lee surrendered."
