When the air raid warning was sounded in the London area this morning, the King and Queen were in a south-east London district.
Their Majesties took shelter in u police station, and the police canteen staff prepared tea and biscuits for them, As soon as the all-clear was sounded, they resumed their journey.
The German planes, only one or two of them, which caused the warning are believed to have been eng-egod on a reconnaissance flight, attempting to survey the damage caused by German raiders last night.
When the King and Queen walked with devout but sure conüdence that I say: Let God defend the Right.
"These cruel, wanton and indiscriminate bombings of London are, of course, part of Hitler's invasion plans. He hopes by killing large numbers of civilians and women and children that he will lerrorise and cow the people of this mighty imperial city and make them a burden and anxiety to the Government, and thus distract our attention unduly from the ferocious onslaught he is preparing.
"Little does he know of the spirit of. the British nation or the tough fibre of Londoners, whose forbears have played a leading part in the establishment of Parliamentary tutions and who have been bred to value freedom far above their lives.
"This Wigked Man"
"This wicked man, the repository jan embodiment of soul-destroying into the shotter about 30 people were there, They stared in astonishment and then clapped their hands. The King leaned back in his chair, crossed his legs comfortably and lit cigarette, while the Queen sat composely.
Tea was not ready when the all-clear was sounded, and the King n marked: "That is the all-clear, but Iam going to wait for some of this tea".
During the morning. Their Majesties saw many scenes of devastation. and were moved again by the amazing spirit with which the common folk of London have responded to German violence. Often tears were very near the Queen's eyes. She talked sympathically to women who had lost dear ones or seen their homes shattered.
