We are glad to hear that Mr. Medhurst has received his official appointment as Consul at Shanghai, in the stead of Mr. Winchester, whose oft-reported resignation is thas at last placed beyond doubt. We need hardly say that the appointment will give general satisfaction. It is likely, we believe, that Mr. Medhurst will soon go home gri leave Of absence, and that his post will be temporarily filled by Mr. Markham.
