Vong Takes Riding Honours

Riding honours fell to P, Y. Vong who piloted National Hero and National Finance To victory. Alfred Noodt and T. C. Woo were next with a win and a place each, while the veteran Portuguese thruster, F. X. Diniz, took another sten towards getting out of the red-letter class by winning the novice event on Hal-bardier.

The day's racing opened with the Great Barrier Reef Handicap, "C" class, and the punters had a slight jolt when Spitfire beat two well-fancied ponies in Rosalie and Fairy-ray to win by three-quarters of a length. Rosalie was off like a scald&d cat the moment the tape went up afa -was followed by Aight.. Around the turn it seemed that the Winner would be Foxylight as he was going great guns but as suddenly as he jumped into the lead with Rosalie, he fizzled out. There is some rumour that he broke a blood vessel at the top of the straight but whether this is true it was not ascertz"n&t.
