Industrial Outlook

The automobile industry also provides a case in point By the end of this year it may be quite difficult to buy a new car, because motor manufacturers may have had to divert or let so many men go to defence industries thet they can't turn out cars enough to meet the current stimulated consumer demand. They may, in fact, be unable to get sheet steel or the alloys, non-ferrous metals, or electrical equipment, nec-assary to produce the 5.000,000-odd cars the public is now expected to ask for this year.

There may be a shortage of house-told electrical supplies, like refrigetators and radios. as the electrical equipment people are all taken up with dynamos and electrical plants for naval and merchant ships, tanks, airplanes. etc. iter plants may be converted into machine-gun factories, and so on.

Just how this will work out is be si uncertain. Perhaps the short-egos will appear as higher prices. perhaps as rationed supplies, perhaps as increased taxes taking bigger and bigger bites out of the income of the man in the street (as well as the man in the middle income brackets).

We shall see.
