At the opening, conditions on the "free" market were rather uncertain particularly in sterling for which currency {he market was only nominal at 23/4d, whilst there were sellers of USS. at 45/8. Shortly after the opening. quotations declined to 49/10 on merchant buying, but later, cover being more generally available, the market took an upward turn. closing steady with sellers at 2:25/32d Sterling and 411/16 U.S$. August, on the "free" market. whilst "official" rates remained unchanged at 35/32d Sterling and 55/16 U.S.. August.
