BEIJING — Every year, in the weeks around the Lunar New Year, hundreds of millions of people in China travel home to their families. The period is called chunyun, the Spring Festival travel season, and it lasts 40 days. For the 2024 season the Ministry of Transport forecast about 9 billion trips, most of them by car.
