SEOUL — The Korean Peninsula has been divided since 1945. The Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea follows the line where the fighting stopped when the armistice was signed on 27 July 1953.
Seoul, the South’s capital, lies about 50 km south of the border; Pyongyang, the North’s, lies about 150 km north of it. South Korea has about 51.7 million people, according to Statistics Korea; North Korea has about 26 million, by the estimate of the United Nations.
The paper names both states as they name themselves in English — the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea — shortened to South and North Korea.
