The distribution "f prizes to the pupils of the above school tok plas on Saturday xfiernoon in the Masonic Hall in the pre~ sence of a large number of people, The prizes were presented by Mrs. Hannen and the recipients received great applause from their schoolmates, The walls of the Hall were tastefully decorated with fl"gs. The platform was occupied by Mr, N. J. Munnen, M.'s Coneul-General nnd Chief Tusticn, nnd Mrs, Hannen, Mr, and Mrs, Mr. J. L, Seutt, and one ortho L, Scott, Chairman of the Council and member of the Exlucational Committee, presided, and in hie speech anid Ladies and Gentlemen, The object of our meeting being as you are well aware, the annual distribution of prizes, I will not delay the real business of the afternoon for more than a few moments while Tsay how much plessure it gives me to be here to-day and to congratulate boys and girls who are ubout to receive the reward Of their industry, in the prizes which Mes. Hannen has kindly consented to distribute. It is needless for me to dwell on the i portant part which education plays in oar lives—that is too well known to require any remarks, but I might, point out that in these days of competition and stiff examinations, the uneducated must go to the wall, and therefore we who are concerned in the welfare of Shanghai feel it incumbent upon us to give the child the best instruction possible, and I think Tuy say that the Trustees of this school are doing all they exn at the present time to secure for them an excellent training, on the mest reasonable terms. To help Mr. and Mra, Lanning xnd rheic nasist~ ants, to whom our best thanks are due for their zealous care for the interests of the school, an experienced lady teacher hus just arrived from England, and we feel bure that this addition to the staff will do much to increase the results of its working, But we must have support, and it is to you, Fathers and mothers, that we look to meet us half way, and give your children all the advantages which we are endeavouring to secure for them, and to you boys and gine T would say also, that all our efforts will be well-nigh wasted unless you too do your part in assisting us, Remember that the future of Shanghai to no small extent lies in your hands, and therefore do your utmost to benefit by the instruction provided for you, so that while you are here yeu may be x oredit'to your ta afterwards, when your time comes to be 10 will be ready to play ourable part in the wellbeing either of this great settlement, or ut whatever place in this wide world your lot may happen to be cast. (Cheers.)
The programme waathen proceeded with, the kindergarten songs of the younger pupils being much appreciated.
