'The ship was put about for San' Prancisco and all-steam was crowded on in a dash for safety. Due to the heavy rolling of the craft and the fury of the gale which showed signs of abating, Capt. Bate wire-essed ahead and was forced to confine his efforts to holding the blaze in check.
The engines of the Trevanion, nominally capable of eight knots, were forced to over ten and the 33 persons on board laboured feverishly to confine the fire to the one hold where it had originated. Life boats were swung out and the dash for San Francisco became more thrilling as smoke was soon carling from a dozen places and with the stern gradually settling, the wind caught the high riding bow with devastate ing effect on the steering.
