Armed Robberies in Shanghai Forty Alleged Robbers Under Arrest

During the past fortnight about forty alleged armed robbers have been arrested by the Municipal charged with being conious armed robberies committed within the past few weeks, Some of these have been dealt with by the Mixed Court and others have been remanded to enable the police to connect the individual accused with specific robberies. Twenty-five of these gentry are now in custody at the Louza police station alone.

'A great proportion of these men commonly designated as armed robbers, are ex-soldiers who are loitering about Shanghai with no visible means of support and who have come here from other provinces. It has been noted that nearly all the armed robbers are natives of interior provinces and it is thought by the police that they have come to Shanghai in the expectation that "trouble" might break out here. There are supposed to be about 100 of these ex-soldier loafers who have turned armed robbers, and most of the gang which is supposed to be more or less organized, live outside the Settlement.
