First Appointments to Commissions

An Army Order was issued on Saturday December 18, says The Times," laying down that first appointments of officers to temporary commissions at home in the rank of second lieutenant will hereafter be made on probation, except in the cases of those who have previously served as officers of the Regular Army, or who have qualified in every respect for commissions in the Regular Army.

The periods of probation will be for the Cavalry and Artillery twelve months or until sent to join an Expeditionary Force; for the Royal Engineers, the same, except that in no case will the period be less than three months; for the Infantry six months, or until reported to be fit for service abroad; and for the Army Service Corps, three months.

The application of the Order will be the same as that now in force for officers appointed to commissions on probation in the Special Reserve of Officers.
