Fakumeo, Jan. 12.
On the evening of the 7th instant horse appeared at the home of its owner, a Japanese medicine dealer, resident Fakumen. A dastardly outrage had taken place on the high pass, that the Japanese merchant was returning from Tiebling with valuable purchase of opium, Rumour puts the value at $3,000 (local currency), either in opium alone, or partly The Japanese Vice-Consul, however, is unaware of the exact amount stolen.
The traveller, who rode alone, on being ordered to dismount by one or two armed robbers, was proceeding to obey, when without provocation or reason given, he was shot dead. The supposition is that the merchant, whose arm was partly paralyzed, excited suspicion by his movements, while dismounting. Tt may have been thought that he was fumbling to produce a weapon.
The body has been sent to Tiehling. Two robbers are said to have been apprehended. The matter of compensation is under discussion with the Chinese authorities
