Sell Their Lives for Their Country

True to their declarations, the lone Chinese battalion who had been holding out for the past few days in the city of Paoshan, refusing to retreat despite withering Japanese shelling and aerial bombardment, had all died at their posts, it was definitely ascertained in Chinese military circles yesterday morning.

For almost a week, this isolated unit of Chinese troops stubbornly stood their ground inside the small walled city, maintaining constant wireless communication with the main body of Chinese forces in the Woosung area.

However, when their radio set became silent on the evening of September 7, anxiety instantly mounted in Chinese field headquarters concerning the fate of this battalion of over 600 gallant officers and men.

The only survivor of the battalion, whose heroic sacrifices are considered most inspiring, was a courier who was specially despatched by the commander of the doomed detachment to the feld headquarters outside the beleaguered city with a short message saying in the most decisive tone:

"We are determined to stay at our pests and to continue fighting the enemy until each and every one of us is killed."
