Liners from foreign countries are few and far between these days. The Empress of Russia is not likely to call here on her way back to Vancouver from Hongkong. The company stated yesterday, however, that they hope to bring the Empress of Japan in to Shanghai on her westbound passage from Canada. She is due on September 21.

From Europe, the s. Chenonceaux is also due here on September 21 Messageries Maritimes, has not celled any of their scheduled arrivals from Marseilles and stated this week that they will continue to bring ships to Shanghai as long as possible.

Now that all communications between the local Harbour Office and Woosung or Yangtszepoo have broken down, records of incoming and outgoing ships are kept by a man stationed on the roof of the Harbour Office Building. Equipped with a telescope, he keeps watch of all activities in the harbour.
