There Is No Secret About

"I do not know whether this is modern laxity of morals.or whether, as I think, it is a survival of an old custom in that part of the country."

In these words Lord Aitchison, the Lord Justice Clerk, in the Edinburgh Court of Session, expressed his opinion of "bundling," an Orkney Islands. custom, whereby Young lovers, with the aid of ladders, climb into the bedrooms of young women after midnight.

"No Shame"

Giving judgment, Lord Mackay declared: "She expressed no shame at To-day he is Technical General Manager of Imperial Airways. Back in 1931, Major Mayo was aboard ship round for America and the West Indies, spying out the land for the Atlantic air services now in the experimental stage.

He saw clearly that only by means of high speed combined with long range could air services across the Atlantic be made successful.

No one knew better than he that a high speed aircraft able to fly nonstop over long distances is so weighted with its essential petrol load that -it can carry very little else and has difficulty in getting into the air.

Wrestling with this problem, he evolved the idea of the pick-a-back composite machine. That was the broad idea. The long-range machine would have enough power to give it high speed when once in the air, but the deficiency in power to get it into the gir would be supplied by a large. lightly loaded machine om; whose back the transport aeroplane would be mounted.

The secondary problem was not how to lock them together for the take-off, but how to separate the heavily-loaded aircraft from the porter machine,
