ESPITE the sweltering heat a good crowd turned out at the races yesterday when the second day of the Shanghai Race Club's sixth extra meeting was held.
One of the closest and most thrilling races was the seventh in which a "quality" field took the course. The race eventually fell to the raging favourite, Cordon Rouge, who carried more than half the money and those who backed him had the fright of their lives when at a certain time he looked like he could not give the extra bit. A notable change came over their faces when he gamely gave all he could which was just sufficient for him to win by a neck from White Parade.
Gold Vase shot into the lead soon after while Cordon Rouge seemed to be tiring, but 50 yards before the post Cordon Rouge gallantly responded to his jockey's pressure and passed (Gold Vase and White Parade to go and win by a neck. White Parade spurted at the last moment and snatched second place by a head from Gold Vase.
Punters received two rather nasty shocks when the pari-mutuel returned over $240 in two consecutive races, The Jacana was the first to spring a surprise when he won the fifth race to pay $249 for a win ticket, while Don Agustin, who I am told not only surprised the public but his owner as well, took the sixth race by a head to pay $241.60. J. Pote-Hunt and V. L. Xavier shared riding honours both winning two races during the day, while the most Successful owner was Mr. A. V. "White who started five ponies and had four firsts and one second. defeat. Five lengths away was The Frigate, third.
