Mr. and Mrs. William Lyons have gone out to the Bryson house on Hungjao Road whilst the Brysons fare away but they are stil! faithful to their houseboat; the Cymba, Mrs. M. K. Boyd, popular member of the house-boating fraternity returned on the "Empress of Japan" from Hongkong on Sunday night. It speaks well for her enthusiasm that when she stepped off the Empress that Mrs. Boyd made immediate tracks for Minghong, where—need one say, an enthusiastic welcome awaited her.
Minghong becomes more and more popular for week-ends, and some houseboat owners have even improved on this habit by staying on board all the week, coming into town by car in the" morning and going back by car immediately work over. The Shanghai Yacht Club's new headquarters make a convenient base for many of the houseboats.
More Seekers of Comfort After a busy season at Union Church, the Rev. and Mrs.
Newsham have departed for _a month's holiday at Unzen. Scores of friends called to wish them bon voyage and the best of fine weather in Japan where lazy days beside the' sea have proved an increasingly! powerful magnet to Shanghailanders, forever on that somewhat grim' search for a comforting breeze. However, Mr. and Mrs. Newsham, whose popularity extends far beyond the confines of church socials, will missed from the intimate gatherings which seem {o mark the somewhat lean season here. It is good know that they will be back again fon September 1, the keener and happier for their holiday in what fis reported to be a far more congenial climate than Shanghai has been enjoying during the past weeks.
Am Unexpected Arrival Well-founded rumour has it that Judge Milton J. Helmick was patiently awaiting word from! America regarding the whereabouts of his secretary, when the telephone! rang. It was Miss Helen Wiley who Yang up to say that she had arrived in Shanghai and was reporting for duty. Delighted, Judge and Mrs. Helmick welcomed the new-comer 10 Shanghai. Miss Wiley was formerly the judge's secretary in Albuquerque, N. M, and was with the Federal Home" Owners' Loan Corporation before accepting her new post in 'Shanghai. Reports indicate that the delight of Judge and Mrs. Helmick in the Settlement is' equalled only by that of Miss Wiley.
