Germany's Food Crisis

Further Drive For

Self-Sufficiency In her efforts to provide an adequate food supply, Germany has now reached a climax. This was the dominating theme of the Fifth Annual Agricultural Exhibition of the Reich Nutrition Board, created in 1934 to make Germany independent of imported food, states the "Financial News.

At the opening of the exhibition at Leipzig, the Minister for Agriculture, Herr Darre, stated that during the last five years food production in the Old Reich had risen by Rin. 2,000, 000,000 compared with the five: average 1928-32, imports having been reduced by this amount. As German exports in 1938 were only Rin. 5,250, G00.C00—or Rin. 432,400,000 less than the imports—it is evident that, but for the success of German agriculture in 1938, Germany would have had to choose between doing without large quantities of industrial raw, materials or an adequate food supply.

Even so, there has been an acute shortage of almost every staple article of diet, and, as no great increase in exports is to be expected, the food supply must continue below normal unless the peasants succeed in raising production still further.
