In addition to keeping a regular supply of water in the Settlement, the Shanghai Waterworks has feadily come to the assistance of the Chapei Waterwotks Company, and Chapei is now entirely dependent on ihe Shanghai Waterworks for its supplies. The prompt assistance given to the Chinese company has undoubtedly prevented an outbreak of cholera in Chapei.
While it is most unlikely, in fact well-nigh impossible, that the Waterworks plant should be completely destroyed, the company has assisted the S.M.C. in the planning of emergency measures for the supply of water in case the Yangtszepoo plant were put entirely out of action. The company's mains would be required for the operation of part of these schemes, and the staff would be indispensable in'order to put them into effect.
That a constant supply of water has been maintained is due not only to experience gained in previous but far less serious troubles, but also to that esprit de corps on which the Waterworks. staff, with some justification, pride themselves in peace and war time alike,
