Attack on Kiangyin Described

Two phases of Wednesdays air raids on the capital of China by Japanese naval aircraft were, vividly described to a correspondent of the local newspaper "Shanghai Mainichi" by Lieutenant-Commander Hide: Ohtsuka and Warrant Officer Kiyonori Koga, Button-holed by the "Mainichi" correspondent just as he got out of his plane after returning from Nanking, Warrant Officer Koga told the following story, "Dark, low-hanging clouds hampered us greatly in our fight" to Nanking, but as we crossed the mountains, the skies cleared and Nanking was spread out below us, "It was just as my plane was passing over Pukow that I saw a Chinese pursuit. plane, a Curtiss-Hawk, flying approximately 500 metres ahead, ^I immediately jumped on the plane's tail. The Chinese ship banked sharply and just as it was turning, I sent a burst of machine-gun fire into the plane.

"I must have caught the gasoline tank, for the ship burst into flames and plunged into the Yangtze. The ship dropped like a flaming meteor and left a long plume of black smoke in its wake.

"By the time I was over the capital again, archie' puffs could be seen all around, "Then I caught a glimpse of another Chinese plane over the Purple-Gold mountain. I managed to bring this one down too,"
