Reinforcements in Canton

Chungking, Jan. 23.

Chinese reports on the situation on the front received here today state that 5,000 Japanese arrived at Can-ion and that further Japanese detach-menís are expected. Military circles believe therefore that the operations in South China will soon be resumed.

Special attention is attached to Chinese reports that the Japanese troops advancing along the Canton-Hankow railway have suddenly been withdrawn for reasons still unknown.

Regarding the operations in Central China it is reported that the Japanese thrust against Ichang, Kingshan and Chihsian, 120 kin. northwest of Hanków, has been checked.

The situation in Shansi province is unchanged at the present, Chinese reports declare.—Trans-Ocean.

Interspersed among these broad changes in political status will be numerous measures affecting individual commodity economics of the various territories.

(Most significant of these will probably be whatever changes are attempted in sugar legislation, which, according to some indications, is in for broad re-study to determine once more the quantitative "stakes" in the rich United States sugar market of the (1) domestic sugar cane producers (2) domestic beet sugar producers (3) Cuban sugar producers (4) territorial sugar producers of Puerto Rice, Hawaii and (5) the Insular producers of the Philippines.—United Press.
