ITE Parade was crowned King of the local turf yesterday afternoon when he galloped to a magnificent victory in the "shaforce" Challenge Cup and Champion Sweepstakes (classic) with the assistance of Alee White, who rode a well-judged race, defeating Bagshot' by a length and a half while Joylight, the strongest public fancy and carrying nearly half of the pari-mutuel, finished a poor third, three lengths away.
Flyinglight put up an unexpectedly good race and almost beat his stable mate, Joylight, failing by the slim margin of a neck, to finish fourth.
Night Express was again caught starting on the wrong leg and took some time to get going.
He led the field as he reached the mile post but White Night, who was purposely started to worry him, ran alongside while White Parade followed by a length. Bagshot, Joylight and Flyinglight were well bunched together all the way while Rye moved up to the leaders at the half-mile post.
White Night tired just before the Monument and the field closed up on Night Express who was then well beaten.
White Parade flashed into the lead the moment he entered into the straight and held off Bagshot's strong challenge to carry on and win while Joylight tired in the last few yards to drop back three lengths.
'Naughty Jupiter Pluvius at the eleventh hour came down with full force just before the first race keep ing away a large part of the Cham-plans Day crowd while the pluckier Tadies who were in attendance were harassed by' the periodical showers. Murmurs of sympathy were heard as the winning riders were led back the seales with mud-covered faces and ripping costumes.
Despite the last. minute shower, favourites ran true to form and in the programme of nine races only one Upet. was scored. that of Prince Charles winning the seventh race to pay his lucky backers §254.60 for 0 Single win. ticket.
