Proudly the flag of Italy fluttered to the top of the masthead above the billets of the Grenadiers of Savoy in Kiaochow Road yesterday morning, as 800 men presented arms, and their trumpeter sounded a salute. The Grenadiers were officially taking over their new quarters on the first day after their arrival in Shanghai from Addis Ababa. 7 It was a significant occasion, being ihe first time since 1932 that Italian troops have been quartered in Shanghai, when a detachment was sent here to join the other defence forces in the state of emergency.
Every Italian who could possibly attend this parade of his country's troops was there on the lawn where the ceremony took place. Diplomatic and consular officials, including the Italian Consul-General in Shanghai, Commander Luigi Neyrone, and leading members of the Fascist organization im Shanghai, attended in an official eapaelty.
The 800 troops marched on to the lawn promptly at 8 o'clock, and took up their position in line opposite the billets. After the Italian flag had been raised above the building, the troops were addressed by the Consul-General, who expressed the pleasure of the Italian community at seeing their own troops once again in Shanghai, and their gratitude for the protection which they were being afforded in this time of crisis. The commanding officer of the battalion, Lieut.-Col. Andreini, replied suitably to the Consul-General's message of welcome, expressing on behalf of his troops their pleasure at being selected to join the other members of the defence force in Shanghai.
Hearty cheers for the Consul-General then went up from 800 throats, and after singing a patriotic song the troops dispersed after a spick and span turnout, and a smart bearing on the parade ground
