Watch the little things;—never despise them, We cannot afford to dismiss them as being of no importance. They may decide our destiny. Yes, watch the little things. The little things in thought, and word, and deed, What could seem more insignificant and of less importance than the thought which comes flashing into the mind and out again? At times they pass so rapidly that we are hardly conscious of them. Just a passing thought—It may be suggested by something we see that catches the eye, Or it may be a word, or a sentence in a book; or some chance remark that we overheard or that is spoken to us—But it comes into the mind as a tiny seed might come, carried by the wind into one's garden, as} small and insignificant. But the seed may become a mighty tree, and the thought may lead to far reaching deeds, Just a passing thought—We need not harbour it. We need not keep them. But if we do—if we give them a place in our minds,—if we turn them over and ponder them,-they cease to be ineffective, Like the seed sown in the earth, they grow, they bring forth fruit.
This is what we mean when we say, "The thought is father to the deed."
And then what of the words we speak? With our actions they are the fruit of the thought seed. And further, ig thoughts are the seeds own in our own minds, then words are the seed we in the mind: of others. Be careful how you sew. The unkind criticism you passed so thoughtlessly, unkind and unjust, has not been forgotten, or unfruitful in the minds of those to whom it was spoken. The idle gossip you passed has gone on and on, and been and you are to blame. 8 has suggested further evil thoughts, and perhaps Jed to some soul's downfall.
