Macao, May 12.
Chinese troops in the Chungshan district are making arrangements to resist a Japanese invasion, which is anticipated to take place in the next few days, as a result of the alleged concentration of warships and troopships at various points on the coast.
It is believed that an attack will probably be launched after the conclusion of the meeting of the Japanese Military Council in Canton, which is scheduled to take place today—Reuter, Asiatic and Indian Dances at Lyceum It is most remarkable how Shanghai turns out in force to view, from time to time, the efforts of various artistes passing through Shanghai, whether they be dancers, singers, actors or members of a musical-comedy troupe. And so it was on Thursday evening, when the Lyceum Theatre was fairly packed with representatives of almost every local community to see the Misses Slavina-Brown and Indira Devi present a most interesting and original series of interpretations of Asiatic and Indian Dam:
Miss Devi, accompanied by an Indian orchestra which appeared in full view upon the stage, evoked genuine admiration in each of the six dances she performed. With subtle gestures of charm, coyness, seductión, shyness, speech and movement she was able to translate by the languorous flexibility of her hands, arms and feet, something that has mot been seen in Shanghai for many days. Clad in native costumes of delightful hue she was perhaps best in "Adjanta, which described how a beautiful nymph, assuming the likeness of Buddha's wife, descended from the famous fresco and vainly tried to seduce the Buddha in meditation. In this particular presentation Miss Devi brought an air of exoticism to the surroundings. her interpretation being easy of comprehension and replete with a masterly understanding of the subject she had in hand.
