The First Christian Church

Concluding Broadcast Talk of Season Given By Rev. John K. Lipman, S.J., on Sunday OF so many years ago a young man was making application for a'position as teacher in a public school of a rather bigoted American neighbourhood.

Among the various things asked him was the nature of his religious affiliations, and being forewarned about the local circumstances in respect to this question, he wrote in answer to the query—"The First Christian Church'

This seemed satisfactorily orthodox to the non-Catholic School Board, and he was given the position. Greatly surprised, then, the next Sunday were the members of the Board when it was brought to their attention that the new her had attended services in the Roman Catholic Church. They lost no time in summoning him before a meeting of the Board, and announced that he was discharged because of deception in replying to the questionnaire.

The young man brought the case to court where he defied anyone to disprove that the Roman Catholic Church was the First Christian Church. And since the judge was confronted with overwhelming historical evidence, he had no other course than to decide the case in favour of the teacher and affirm that the charge in question was not sufficient grounds for dismissal, because the answer given was the truth.
