SUFFERER.
Shanghai, July 20.
Yesterday evening we had one of the grandest sights I've witnessed for a jong time. The day had been intensely hot; the mercury standing at 99' in the shade about à p.m. In the evening ihe wind began to blow strong from the southwest, gradually veering round io the eastward. At about 7 pin heavy clouds appeared in the southwest with occasional flashes of heat lightning, Later on clouds also began to hit above the northeastern horizon. and {ror both quarters flashes of lightning were seen and the rumbling of distant thunder was heard. With a strong wind sül blowing. the clouds lifted and spread, till by a few minutes past 8 o'clock they formed dark battling mass, which met in the zenith, and sent forth an incessant blaze of sheet lighting, and most continuous rumble of muffled with occasional zigzag flashes fire, followed by sharp, detonating peals that seemed to shal the earth itself. Along both the eastern and western horizon, there was a stu of clear, but beautifully coloured sky, a in width perhaps. and juncture, the full-orbed n arose above the eastern hi riting in its deep clear colour face as it ascended in th majesty a contrast with the Clements overhead, forming for grandeur and impr is seldom surpassed. Shortly moon was obscured and by 9 o'clock or thereabouts, a fine rain was falling. which continued at intervals till about 2 o'clock this morning. Everything looks refreshed today. and there are indications of more rain to follow, it is very much needed, for from every direction come reports of the crops beginning to suffer.
