The Englishman's love of tradition is so great that any minor event concerning an established custom is a topic for public discussion. When the Woolsack recently became due for re-stuffing, it was found to be filled, not with wool, but with horsehair! This was a bitter blow.
Six hundred years ago it was decreed that the Lord Chancellor's seat in the House of Lords should be a sack of wool, to remind Parliament that wool was once the foundation of England's greatness. There was good reason why the Woolsack should always be filled with wool, and wool only., But it is never too late to remedy matters, and the Woolsack is now being re-stuffed with the genuine article. This time, however, the Government is going one better and using the mixed clippings of sheep from different parts of the Empire.
