The value of the accomplishment will at first be chiefly in medical research, which for decades has been bottled by the inability to discover, identify and isolate the bacteria causing certain epidemics and deadly diseases, among which were measles influenza and infantile paralysis. It was finally proved, as had been always supposed, that these diseases were actually caused by bacteria but these latter were too small to be seen with microscopes with linear magnification of only up to 2,000. The electronic microscope, however, will not only reveal these ultra-bactoria to the eye but will even bring within range of vision all details of cell life including the structural nature of the cell nuclei and chromosomes, thereby enabling the laws of heredity to be studied more closely, while colloidal chemistry will no yield up many more of its most puzzung secrets.
Seeing the Dysentery "Bug"
The inventors have already succeeded in obtaining a magnification of the hitherto invisible dysentery bacillus up to four to five centimetres, it being discovered that this bacillus has two kinds, one virulent and the other harmless.
