Hankow, July 12.
Kuling, formerly the most famous of the Chinese summer resorts for the wealthy class, now resembles a refugee camp, according to reports received here from Kiukiang, which state that the resort is now crowded ith 20.000 war refugees from the Kiukiang area.
Normally Kiukiang has a population of 80,000, but there are now only about 20,000 people left, and all shops, hotels and banks are closed.
Most owners locked their doors before their departure, but many, in their haste to leave the city, forgot to do so, leaving their belongings and furniture lying about in a disorderly state.
One of the busiest Yangtze ports in the past, Kiukiang is at present without a steamer or a junk While villages and towns east and also west of Kiukiang have been subjected daily to heavy bombings by Japanese aircraft, Kiukiang itself has so far been spared the horrors of bombing.—Reuter.
