A large crowd is expected to attend the mid-week gala to be held at the Rowing Club this evening, starting at 9 o'clock, Last week spectators were treated to some fine swimming the special attraction being the appearance by invitation of many of the Foreign "Y" stars, including Toby Gavriloff, Archie Logan and L. Oliveira, All three are Interport men, and form the strongest forward combination in the Water-polo League, besides being the best individuals in the city. Club records were smashed on three occasions, while a representative side from the Foreign "Y" defeated a strong Club Seven by 8-1 in a friendly water-polo match in which some fine handling and passing movements were displayed by the well-trained visitors.
This evening's programme will include several novel events, including a blindfold race for Ladies and a pillow-fight for Men, The main event however will be the League fixture between the Strokeside Seven, last year's joint-Champions, and the Bow Side combination. The two sides represent the senior and junior teams of the Rowing Club. Bruce Lamken, powerful pivot-man, of last year's senior side, is missing, and to fill the breach L. D, M. Beattie has been moved up from the back division He should have no difficulty in upholding his predecessor's standard of play.
The inclusion of E. Smith, who has just returned from Hongkong, to combine with his brother Cyril at back will further strengthen the side. and most important of all is the news that both C. N. Brown and J, B. Brown are returning to the pool.
Enviable Reputations The brothers have enviable reputations in local (and Tientsin aquatic circles, and are responsible for the training of the Club's two teams this year. Doubtless they will support E. J. Muir in the attack.
The Club's junior combination. Bowside, will profit by the inclusion of H. G. Fabian, non-playing captain of the Club, his brother Louis and E J. G. W. Lewis. All three have.a good knowledge of the game, and should be able to send away the younger and fast members with the right kind of pass. A. Pressler, C. H. Hodgman and Farmer, a mid-distance man, will form the spearhead of an attack which is becoming more of a menace at every practice. and these men know that they will not lack support from behind when they move into the goal mouth.
