the Editor of the "Nowri-Ciixa Dany News" am a constant reader of your Jesteemed paper. and Ihave read many complaints addressed to the Editor on the serious annoyances that exist in four city. But unfortunately 1 have Rot seen any letters of late complain. ing "of the local beggar situation. However, an unfortunate incident night has forced me to take up the pen and protest.
Last night on my way home along Bubbling Well Road 1 was touched on the arm, and on turning round I received a terrible fright as I stared Into the disfigured face of a beggar. His face was a terrible sight, and it Jappeared to me as if he hod leprosy fon his face, for he had no nose and hiis features were practically undistinguishable.
Since the local war, a number refugee camps have been set up, why could not a camp be made for the local beggars? They certainly are a. big. nuisance to shoppers and pedestrians, Seymour Read and St. George's are often crowded with these unfortunates, and the worst is that many of them have all sorts of diseases and sicknerses, and some are not only content to beg but often take hold of you 9s you pass. T think it fs about time that something should bbe done for these miserable people.
If there is any truth in the ru incurs that the SE. is considering another increase in the pay of their employees, T would, suggest that the forthcoming increase be halved and. Jone half of it used in providing for 2 camp of some sort for the beggars.
At least the streets of Shanghai! would be a shade cleaner and safer to walk through.
A Reswext.
