President Roosevelt announced to ihe press today that next year's naval budget will be increased by "U.$.150,000,000, which will probably bring the total of, proposed appropriation to nearly U.S.$800,000,000.
Additional expenditures will be made to facilitate immediate construction of new vessels to replace over-age warships. The entire naval programme for the next five years "was authorized by Congress when it passed the Vinson Naval Bill this spring, but actual expeuiture have to be appropriated for by each Congress.
President Roosevelt's recommendations follow suggestions made re-ochtly by Admiral William D. Leahy Chief of Naval Operations The programme envisages the most powerful fleet afloat, and which will be placed practically on a war-time basis in 1939 as a result of continuous troubles in Europe and the constant threat of current Far Eastern hostilities spreading to include Soviet Russia.
Such in increase would bring the United States' annual arms budget to within U, S.$1,500,000,000 or more than twice às much as the cost of national defence only a decade ago.
Admiral Leahy recently said the additional funds are needed to complete construction of as many Vessels now on the ways as possible before 1940. The United States has approximately 70 new warships under construction, including the 35000-ton super-dreadnoughts North Carolina and Washington.—United Press,
