Following the record drop of quotations of several Government bonds secured on the Customs revenue as a result of Chungking's declaration on a temporary and partial moratorium en foreign debts secured on the Customs, the price of gold was reported yesterday to have gone up to such an extent that the $2,000 peak price for 10 ounces of the metal was surpassed.
There was admittedly a little confusion in the gold market but the price of the metal was said to have nothing to do with the general financial situation. It was pointed out, however, that it was a bad sign showing that' wealthy people were selling Government dands in order to obtain gold. The price at first fluctuated around $2,010 but later owing to big purchases mace by Chinese banks it soared to the $2,020 mark.
