To many Shanghailanders the prospect of spending a day on the *muddy Whangpoo" is not to be relished, but to those who know the joy of speeding through its choppy surface to the tune of an outboard motor it is a pleasure that leaves little to be desired. The flying spray flashing past the bows and the foamy wake boiling under the stern of your craft have to be seen to be enjoyed.
At present there are no less than uch motors in Shanghai, ranging from 9.8 to 22 h.p., and a new shipment of another 45 motors is expected next month, according to Messrs. Yangtsze Motors, Ltd., general agents ior the famed Johnson Sea Horse Outboard Motors. This new shipment will bring the present stock to 70 engines: which include every model produced by the Johnson company.
It is proposed that a local sporting organization be formed by those interested in this sport At present Henley and Minghong, Shanghai's pleasure resort for yachtsmen and rowing men, are "closed" areas but as soon as this club is organized and well under way it will endeavour to obtain permission to use these waters.
A local shipyard is now turning out a few small boats to be fitted with Johnson Sea Horse outboard engines and as soon as the first racing model is completed Messrs. Yangtsze Motors will issue a challenge to anyone who cares to accept it that their boat will give the better performance.
