To the Editor of the *Nowri-Cuna Day News"
'Suj—The letter which appears in your columns today dealing with the question of BBC. news relays re-Veals Mr, INciis* personal equation only' too well. He has on previous occasions signed. himself as Correspondent, and the advocacy of such a biassed partisan must tend to destroy his own case toa large extent.
"Your correspondent's apparently insatiable thirst for news now leads him to suggest that Radio Station XCDN feed his cavernous maw with largely. repetitive statements at 8. 6 and 1 pam., and to ensure the adoption of such a thoroughly selfish course, he is willing to sabotage every feature programme on the Station's schedule. His contention that the public can get all the entertainment it wants. from other coal stations is as ill-founded as his. assumption" that the Goebbels technique is the only satisfactory way of presenting the factual word to people.
'Any' Institution that caters for varied tastes, as Station XCDN tries to do, cannet satisfy all the people all the time, but there is no doubt that lis diversified feature prov grammes are one of the salient features of its broadcasts. & fact that confirmed only too clearly by the manner in which other radio stations {umple over themselves to imitate them or to tempt away the volunteers responsible for the originals over XCDN, In other words, to satisfy a news. hungry causus, for the existence of which T am prepared to take Mr. Iwcus' word, KCDN's other prouvammes Will have to be reduced to a series of completely amorphous half-hours which will completely preclude any of the more ambitious ud praiseworthy features towards which the Station has been turning attention, "in addition—a point which Mr. Ixcuis prefers to overlook—we should be subjected at 10 pam. to 9 BBC. relay. the reproduction quality of which is uncertain, to say the Toast, containing news which, with= out the slightest doubt, wilt have been included in XCDN's own news broadcast at 9 p.m. As anyone con~ nected with the dissemination of news in Shanghai knows, the B.B.C. except occasionally in the case of ome official communique. is long way behind the news services available here when it comes to spot "MY most sincere thanks for according this letter the courtesy of space in your columns, News-Sares Shanghai, April Enough Over XCDN-
To the Editor of the "Nonru-Cuma Datcy News"
Sin,—Your correspondent, Mr. F. A. InGttS, appears to have lored the fact that Station XCDN already Droadeast news in English at 1245, pam, 9:00 pin., 11:00 pam, and 1140 Pin, as well as relaying the BBC. ews at 8:00 p.m,, (conditions por= mitting), Tk would seem, the rot that they are already supplying very good news service and that if they attempt to overload their Station with further-news broadcasts, can only be done by sacrificing other features which have popularized the Vantery. Shanghai, Apr. 2, Support for Mr. Inglis To the Editor of the fonrut-Cinwa Dany News"
SmI was interested to read Min. Inetas! Totter stating that the BBC. News and "Questions of the Hour" Talk are now audible in Shanghai at 10 pam. and. pointing out. that if XCDN relayed the News at 10 pin. they would not conflict with XINA'S News at 8 pin. as docs the present! relay; and T wondered what replies would be forthcoming.
The reply printed in your issue of April 2 was, in my opinion, most unexpected and unwarranted. consisting as it did of a clumsy and anonymous attempt to discredit a well-informed letter, The writer, hiding under a cloak, complains that Ma. Inéuis is biased in favour of the BBC. News, T think the person who. wrote this should disclose his name so that your readers can see whether not he is intimately connected with XCDN, and has a bias of his! own, Hongkong, Singapore, Penang, Ran: goon and Australian and Indian stations see it to relay London well at least twice a night, without detriment to the remainder of their programmes, and as regards the quality. of XCDN's relays no doubt these ex. perimental attempts could be improved.
As regards the text of the BB.C._ News, T happen to know that both
Text read from the printed page and cleaned; old type leaves the occasional error.
