A 52-year-old wife of a Ponder's End, Middlesex, shoe repairer is now about and smiling again. She was "dead" for six minutes in a remarkable operation which marked an important advance in British surgery.
The operation" she survived had never before been successful in England. Only 11 other similar cases in ihe world are known.
The patient, Mrs. Kate Linwood, owes her life to the brilliant skill of Mr. Ivor Lewis, a surgeon at the North Middlesex County Hospital.
Both attended a recent London meeting of the Royal Society of iMédicine, "It doesn't hurt now," remarked Mrs, Linwood to eminent doctors who examined the scar over the heart made by an operation to remove a blood clot, 16 inches long, which blocked the main blood-vessel leading from the heart to the lungs.
Mrs. Linwood entered North Middlesex County Hospital last September suffering from housemaid's knee. A minor operation was performed, but later there were signs of blood poisoning. Then she was suddenly seized by violent pains in the chest, became breathless and blue, and rapidly collapsed.
