Pulmonary Artery Clot

Death would, in the ordinary way, have followed in a few minutes, for she had talon victim to one of the most dreaded and rare complications of surgery—a clot in the pulmonary artery.

The operation which followed was described by Mr. Lewis to the members of the Royal Society of Medicine.

First he cut away three ribs and laid bare Mrs. Linwood's heart. Next he opened the bag which surrounds ihe heart itself, and located the pul-mon ary artery. By this time Mrs.. Linwood's heart had stopped beating and she had ceased to breathe for six minutes.

Mr. Lewis opened the great vessel and, with delicate forceps, dragged out the clot. Quickly sewing up the artery, which is nearly an inch in diameter. he massaged the heart back to life and closed the bag.

For days, Mrs. Linwood was unconscious, and was kept in an oxygen tent. She lay between life and death.

In an interview last night at his home in High-street, Ponders End, the husband revealed how family sacrifices had helped to.restore Mrs. Linwood to health.

Kathleen, our 23-year-old daughter, gave the first blood transfusion, Mr. Linwood said. Shortly afterwards Mrs. Linwood's brother, Mr, Frederick Barry, of Muswell Hill, gave another.

My son and I supplied the reminder in tio transfusions. Mrs.

Linwood was in the oxygen tent at "jhe time, so instead of a direct S.
