Once again the "unlucky" Hope Diamond hag figured in the news, this time because its American owner, a "Mrs. McLean, has been threatened by kidnappers.
These stories of sinister jewels are to be taken or left, as you feel disposed. The Hope Diamond (so called because it once belonged to Lord Francis Hope) is said to have come, long ago, from a Burmese idol, You may say it had a fairly good start in malignity. At one one the unhappy Marie Antoinette possessed One finds it hard to believe that a Burmese god would think it worth while to cherish resentment for so long. Reason which so obviously influences humanity must surely influence humanity's gods. N On the other hand, one does believe in luck to a reasonable extent, say with Dr. Johnson that it is unlucky, to place a loaded pistol against one's head, and pull the trigger.
