1f one represents by 100 the average number of registered. unemployed in the world in 1929 (that is in 16 of the principal industrial countries), the average will be found to have risen to 164 in 1930, 235 in 1931, 201 in 1982, and to have dropped to 277 in 1933, 225 in 1084, 196 in 1935, 151 in 1996. For April 137, it will be found to have dropped to 113. These figures, which indicate in a particularly striking ratner the.effects of the world economic crisis on the possibilities of employment for workers, are the international index numbers of unemployment calculated by the International Labour Office. They appear in the "LL.O, Year Book of Labour Statistics," which: just been published, Contained also in the Year Book are; international index numbers of "workers employed in industry, which show that, for each 100 workers in employment in 1929, there were only 92 in 1930, 83 in 1931, and 75 in 1032. But the average rose again to 78 in 1933, 84 in 2934, 88 in 1935, and 93 in 1036, By. March 1937, the average had reached 97. A table of international index numbers of actual hours of work, also appearing in the Year Book, shows, at the same time, that for 100 hours worked in 1929, only 88 were worked in 1930, 75 in 1931, and 64 in 1932, In 1933, however, the average rose to 69, in 1934 to 74, in 1935 to 78, and in 1936 to 85. Another study recently published in the International Labour Review brings together these figures with index numers of industrial production prepared by the of work, importance of the social problem created by rationalization and the substitution of machines for men, On the basis of the above figures, the LIO. has calculated international index numbers of production per worker, which, with 1920 equalling 100, ere: 94 in 1990, 90 in 1931; 84 in 1932; 92 in 1933; 91 in 1034; 97 in 1985; and 103 in 1036. It has also calculated international index numbers of production per hour, which are given as follows: 100 in 1029, 98 in 1030, 100 in 1931, 98 in 1932, 104 in 1988, 104 in 1934, 109 in 1995 and 113 in 1936, From tHe "NonrH-CHiNA Dany News,"
