The huge movement of vehicles ever the Garden Bridge to evacuate foodstuffs and other property from the Eastern Area continued yester-bay and resulted in the removal of an even larger quantity of goods than on Sunday, the first day of the evacuation. The bridge was closed for northbound traffic at 330 pin, and by dark the last car was back from Hongkew.
The Council officials in charge of the removal were unable to give the exact number of vehicles used and trips made yesterday, but said that the figures were considerably larger than Sunday's. At the same time it was pointed out that the total of removals for the two days represented only a small portion of the goods stored. The refrigerating plants in the Eastern Area are still operating and it is hoped to preserve all remaining perishables. No further evacuation will be permitted for the time being.
