Tablets in Honour of Killed Erected in Trenches On the morning of September 23, while Buddhist rites were being held throughout Japan, Lieutenant-Commander Kinji Baba, in command of a detachment on the Shanghai front, stood at attention in a trench before 24 small wooden mortuary tablets and bowed his head in silent prayer for the souls of the men under his command who died in action, This touching story was given prominence in yesterday morning's edition of the "Shanghai Nippo," local Japanese-language paper.
These 24 tablets on which are inscribed the names of those under his command who died fighting, were personally made by Lieutenant-Commander Baba and have been placed in a provisional altar built inside the trench. Each morning and each evening, the paper said, the officer prays before this altar.
"When the general advance is ordered, the journal said, these tablets will be carried by chosen men of the detachment.
