Stronger Attitude to Britain, America Prophesied; Foreign Office Purge Seen

London, Aug. 23.

UN the House of Commons yesterday Mr. R. A. Butler, Under-

Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, was asked if any reply had been received to a request made by Sir Robert Craigie, British Ambassador to Japan, to Mr. Yosuke Matsuoka, Foreign Minister, for definite information as to the future trend of Japanese foreign policy, and if hehad any statement to make with reference to the situation in Shanghai and other places in the Far East consequent on the withdrawal of British forces.

The question was put by Mr. Geoffrey Mander, Opposition Liberal member for the East Division of Wolverhampton.

Ai written reply from Mr. Butler stated: "I am unaware that any direct request in the sense indicated has recently been made by Sir Robert Craigie.

But Mr. Mander doubtless has seen from the press the general statement of policy which was issued by the Japanese Government on August 1.

I have no statement to make regarding the second part of the question.".
