The shots were heard by some con-Stables on duty near by and they gave chase after the assassins. In their attempt to avoid arrest, the murderers opened fire at the policemen. All the shots went wild, wounding two Chinese boys who were returning from Chinese school. One of them was wounded in the thigh, while the other sustained injuries to his leg and foot. They were taken to the Ste. Marie's Hospital where their wounds were treated. Both boys were expected to be out of hospital soon as the wounds were not of a serious nature.
As soon as the gunmen opened fire on the police, the latter whipped out their pistols and shot at the assassins, but they managed to disappear after climbing into the French Park over the fence. In escaping, they threw away their pistols.
The deceased at one time owned a Chinese printing plant, but had later become a broker. Although unaware of facts leading to the murder, French detectives believed that it had been committed for revenge. The ballistic department of the French Police failed to identify the abandoned pistols.
