Despairing Plea

FRUIT OF CHAOS

To the Editor of the "Mobrn-Chixn Dairy News Sm—A devastated country car benefit. no one. A "conquered" people hinders human progress. A well-armed lawless state destroys civilization of the world and the reign of law must give way to the practice of lawlessness. International chaos and calamity are inevitable. It is bad enough for any reasonable man to think of the consequences. The question of such consequences in point of space and time is obviously far-reaching. One must see from different points of view the logic the present Sino-Japanese conflict. There can be no doubt about the urgency of world intervention to ease the grave situation in which so much life, property, liberty, and above all, the common ideal of man are at stake.

Prince Konoye and Mr. Hirota who are at the helm of the Japanese Government explain the Japanese military adventure into China in terms clear enough. It is intended, according to the Prince, to beat the Chinese until they bend their) knee and, according to the Foreign Minister, to force the Chinese anti-

Japanese thinking out of their mind. Evidently the old-fashioned Japanese oligarchy is not only twisting the relation of cause and effect, but also sharpening an ancient wit to match a ruthless modern militarism, Though already so ruthlessly launched, the attempt to conquer a vast country and a large nation cannot succeed. What and where is this cruel Japanese invasion leading to in the present-day world? When will it end? Who are suffering for it? Only the Chinese? Who are benefited thereby? Every Japanese? What can be said about the innocent or the interested third parties? What shall be said about the possibility of repetition in other lands of such horrors as we abhor so much now?

Interyention is moral, legal, economical, political. and humane. ch Shanghai, Sept. 5.
