OP SEPTEMBER 10, 1877
The Municipal Council demur to the proposed site for the Margary Memorial at the corner of the Bund and the Soochow road, on the pleas, l. that it would be an obstruction to traffic in that position, and 2. that it would encroach on the road. A new possible site for the Hongkew police station has been discovered and the Council are in treaty for it. They do not consider Messrs, Muller and Fisher's sawmill in the Nanking road a nuisance such as to warrant their interference. No doubt they are right. What surprises us is that the native jeweller in Honan road, who was lately prohibited, should have been considered more noisy. Permission has been given Mr. Mawhood to stand broughams on the Bund. A proposal for widening Szechuen road between Canton road and ihe Yangkingpang is under consideration. Renewed efforts are being made to carry out the Markham road extension. We wish them all success, and wish we could hear there was prospect of the Cemetery road extension being also carried out. That would render practicable the round drive by Sikawei which is now practically stopped by the West Gate village.
