there is any reduced spending power in Shanghai it will not be evident this evening, and as at Yuletide, all places of entertainment will be crowded with gay throngs ready to greet the New Year in the traditional grand style, which does not allow any depressing thoughts to pervade the atmosphere of gaiety.
While many Shanghailanders will see the adven: of the New Year in the jolly atmosphere provided by the city's entertainment spots, which have arranged many special attractions for the celebrating public, there will be those who will prefer to welcome 1939 in the privacy of their own homes and with this in view many private' parties have been arranged for tonight.
